When we first visited this property in Highland Park we found a bare front yard with no privacy or fencing as well as some home installed broken concrete that while done with painstaking TLC, definitely needed some expert help. Our client had already done most of the final touches to the exterior of his home, a lovely muted palette of earth tones with a contemporary zest, but wanted some help materializing his vision for the yard. The design would provide more privacy bordered by a dramatic living fence made out of steel planters. After we removed the existing broken concrete, we began the fabrication of the planters, built forms for the rectilinear custom concrete pavers which would be saddled by pebbles marking a patterned entryway. Eventually the pavers would be juxtaposed with a broken concrete hardscape area set in decomposed granite and dymondia ground covers. We finished everything off with a custom horizontal slat fence and boulder fountain. When the planters were installed with drip irrigation, we seeded them with fava bean to help encourage nitrogen retention in the soil. To complete the process we planted with a meadow of ornamental grasses visually tied together by a brilliant palette of bright greens, yellow with accents of purple and blue. Including Golden Goddess hedge bamboo, Acorus gamineus 'Ogon', Japanese Sweet Flag and Hakonechloa macro aureola, Japanese Forest Grass.  Although we rarely plant strictly ornamental gardens, it has always been our pleasure to work in collaboration with our clients and truly realize their best intentions for their home and families. Stay tuned for more images of the yard and living fence as the plants continue to grow in.
