Please join us at the Garden Conservancy's Open Days tour at "Rancho La Loma" on April 25, 2010. Rancho La Loma, the U-shaped house on La Loma Road and Lakeview Road was originally designed by well known architect Glenn Elwood Smith, completed 1938. The original owner made it his homestead at the confluence of two creeks that ran down along the current streets of Laguna and La Loma and into the Johnston Lake across the street from the San Rafael Winery, at a time when the neighborhood was just transitioning into a Pasadena neighborhood, with few homes in the recently annexed area.  The mature fruit trees, palm trees, and specimen trees are a result of his horticulture over the decades, however, by 1987 when the Barrantes family bought it, the house was a mess from renters and deferred maintenance, with tasteless touches from the 50’s-70’s.  Ricardo Barrantes would completely renovate from floor to roof, with his own labor and helpers, inside and outside, over the last twenty-two years bringing out the best of the eclectic Spanish Rancho style.
